Salem Extension Open

Salem Extension Open to Traffic

After years of planning and months of construction, the Salem extension is now open to traffic, including vehicles, a bicycle lane and pedestrian sidewalks. The Salem extension was designed to alleviate heavy traffic through the Nolker and Cardinal Circle neighborhood. Nolker Drive was never intended to be a through street and used to be a dead end, before it was opened up to connect to D Highway over 60 years ago. On average, around 600 cars a day travel down the residential street with on-street parking adding to the congestion, often turning the narrow road into a single lane of traffic. The Salem extension will give drivers a more direct route connecting the north and south parts of town without funneling them through a residential neighborhood.

The speed limit on the new section of Salem will be set at 35 miles per hour, while the speed limit on Salem from Moss/Hazel and southward will remain at 25 miles per hour due to the many residential driveways that connect to the road.

It is important to note that the new intersection located on the south end of the project where Salem, Moss and Hazel come together is now a four-way stop. Traffic in all directions must come to a complete stop before proceeding. Police Chief Bruce Summa states, “We understand that this new four-way stop is going to take some time to get used to, so our officers will be educating the public and giving warnings during the transition to the new traffic pattern.”

Altogether, the City hopes that the new road will make the Nolker and Cardinal Circle neighborhoods safer for the families that live there and easier for motorists to get through town. The City’s number one priority will always be the safety of our citizens.

Hope everyone is having a great summer and is enjoying preparing for school to start again. A couple of updates for the pool's operations as we finish out this pool season soon:

1. As of TODAY at 3pm, we are going to start selling all of our concessions at a significantly lower price to try and get rid of inventory before Labor Day! Make sure to grab some snacks at low prices next time you're here.

2. We will be open everyday until school starts on the 19th like normal, and then after that, we will only be open the 23rd, 24th, 30th, 31st of August, and Labor Day (September 1st).

3. On Labor Day, our hours will be from 12pm-6pm. Amenities will be limited that day as we will be preparing to close for the winter.

Thanks everyone, and hope you see you at the pool as we get ready to wrap up the 2025 season!

Our newest member is Vanessa Swope. When asked what she thinks makes Lawson awesome, she replied, "The strong sense of community belonging. The inclusivity for all those in the community including activities for everyone. The feeling of “home”!"
We appreciate Vanessa and her enthusiasm for Lawson!
